چکیده

Although mark-recapture methods are among the most powerful tools for monitoring wildlife populations, the secretive nature of some species requires a comprehensive understanding of the factors that affect capture probability to maximize accuracy and precision of population parameter estimates (e.g., population size and survivorship). Here, we used aquatic snakes as a case study in applying rigorous markrecapture methods to estimate population parameters for secretive species. Specifically, we used intensive field sampling and robust design markrecapture analyses in Program MARK to test specific hypotheses about ecological and methodological factors influencing detectability of two species of secretive aquatic snakes, the banded watersnake (Nerodia fasciata), and the black swamp snake (Seminatrix pygaea). We constructed a candidate set of a priori mark-recapture models incorporating various combinations of timeand sex-varying capture and recapture probabilities, behavioral responses to traps (i.e., trap-happiness or trap-shyness), and temporary emigration, and we ranked models for each species using Akaike’s Information Criterion. For both banded watersnakes and black swamp snakes we found strong support for time-varying capture and recapture probabilities and strong trap-happy responses, factors that can bias population estimation if not accommodated in the models. We also found evidence of sex-dependent temporary emigration in black swamp snakes. Our study is among the first comprehensive assessments of factors affecting detectability in snakes and provides a framework for studies aimed at monitoring populations of other secretive species. 2011 The

Identifying the factors affecting the reduction of Caspian lamprey population (Caspiomyzon wagneri Kessler, 1870) in Shiroud River: The need to adopt management-protection policies

The Caspian lamprey (Caspiomyzon wagneri) is one of the most important ecological and native fish species of the Caspian Sea basin. The present study was conducted to identify the factors affecting the population decline of this species in Shiroud River as one of the important habitats of fish in the southern basin of the Caspian Sea. For this purpose, three stations were selected for sampling ...

Detectability in Audio-Visual Surveys of Tropical Rainforest Birds: The Influence of Species, Weather and Habitat Characteristics

Indices of relative abundance do not control for variation in detectability, which can bias density estimates such that ecological processes are difficult to infer. Distance sampling methods can be used to correct for detectability, but in rainforest, where dense vegetation and diverse assemblages complicate sampling, information is lacking about factors affecting their application. Rare specie...

The most important climatic factors affecting distribution of Zygophyllum atriplicoides in semi-arid region of Iran (Case Study: Isfahan Province)

Zygophyllum atriplicoides is one of the important species of Iran rangelands that has special importance owing to some properties like high distribution rate, coverage percentage, density, and plant biomass that make it possible to supply a part of forage needed by livestock during spring and winter as well as to avoid soil degradation against water and wind erosions. This research tries to stu...
